In the age of predominantly electronic forms of communication, the good old greeting card may no longer be as important as it used to be, but it certainly has become a more special way to connect. Usually, greeting cards are specially designed for a specific occasion – birthdays, Christmases, weddings, openings. Consequently, certain traditions have long been established as to how a card designed for such an occasion should look like.
Since these traditions are so well established, it is a special challenge and opportunity for a designer to play with, allude to, or to upend the well known imagery of the greeting card.
In this new light, the old forms often take on a new tone and quality – sometimes ironic, sometimes seriously nostalgic. But that’s not to say that there is nothing modern to be found here. On the contrary, the majority of the designs you will find on the following pages are fairly modern variations and re-inventions of a classic means of communication.
There’s much more to a greeting card than just flowers and garlands. Time to rediscover the good old happy-birthday-, season’s-greetings-, or congratulations-card. Don’t send a simple card when you can send a piece of art!
