The "Sparrow Dance" is one of the traditional dances of footmen, performed by dancers who literally imitate the movements of sparrows. It is believed to have originated from an impromptu dance performed by Sakai quarriers in the Senshu region at a banquet celebrating the relocation of Sendai Castle. Hokusai Katsushika presented this'Sparrow Dance' in the third volume of'Hokusai Manga', one of its etehon (art manual) series. Hokusai's lively brushstrokes vividly capture the dance movements of people wearing kimonos and lackey hats, as if they were going to start moving at any moment.
