As the successors to an artisanal studio founded in 1624 in Kyoto, Kira Karacho are specialists in ‘karakami’, a traditional craft made by adding designs and decorations to washi, or Japanese handmade paper. Akihiko Toto, a leading figure in the field, and Aiko Senda, who began creating ‘karakami’ cards as a teenager, together present a special collection of this traditional paper. Toto has developed ‘karakami’ into a fine art form with his unique printing techniques, while Senda’s distinct colour sensibility contributes to her dedication to its enrichment and appreciation. The book consists of 96 sample pieces of stationary with 30 different patterns and colour schemes.
