First built at the present site in the 8th century as a watchtower, the bell tower, or campanile, of St. Mark's Basilica in Venice has repeatedly been rebuilt over the centuries. The 330-foot brick tower reached its present form in 1514, though it collapsed entirely in 1902. It was rebuilt as it was, with additional internal bracing, and reopened on St. Mark's Day, April 25, in 1912. This model is in 1:200 scale, with 35 pieces, and is easy to construct. When finished it is 20 inches high. It is one of a series of beautifully detailed paper model kits of famous and important buildings, created by Mexican architect Jesus Moctezuma and produced by Italian publisher Domus. Printed on semi-gloss card stock, with multilingual instructions, these architectural models range from easy to challenging—most are die-cut and can be punched out and glued together in an evening or two—and come in various scales and sizes. The Folio series is packaged in a glossy folder that describes the building in Italian, English, French, and German. The Basic series comes plainly wrapped without a folder. The Boxed series comes in a colorful gift box.
