Vital Grace is a photographic essay that looks at the beauty and agility of the black male dancer. It takes this observation one step further by providing imagery that allows the viewer to see the reality of the person within the dancer. The interview portion of Vital Grace lends a very special element to the overall composition by providing a forum for the men to speak out about their lives and their art. Some of the people interviewed are; Gregory Hines, Geoffrey Holder and, Evander Holyfield! Vital Grace does not follow the format of the standard "dance" book. It uses Duane Cyrus’ choreography and Joanne Savio’s photography to go beyond the theatrical image of these artists to explore the vitality and grace of their spirit. It is definitely a book for the new millennium!
