The manuscript for The First Man was discovered in the wreckage of the car crash in which the author died in 1960. Part autobiography, part a narrative of Algiers, it follows Jacques Cormery as he grows up in poverty but is introduced to a new view of the world by a teacher, then as an adult in France queries where he truly belongs.
